*Brand new content coming July 2008 for teachers, librarians and Pony Clubs*
Looking for a way to motivate kids to read and write? Here's a sampling of presentations and workshops I'll be offering in 2008 and 2009.
Elementary and middle school:
Day in an Author's Life:
This presentation covers a typical day for a children's author. From drafting, to editing and creating storyboards. The talk will take kids through the steps of becoming an author and will give them tips to pursue this career. Materials that I'll bring include: rejection letters, drafts, edits and a mock storyboard.
Q&A:
In a no pressure environment, students can ask questions about writing and being an author. We can also play a true/false game. Statements include, "All authors are rich" and "You must pay someone to publish your novel." Students can answer true or false and then I'll give them a brief answer.
Freewriting:
I'll bring a photo or written prompt and students will be given a time limit to write a short story about the prompt. Willing students will read their stories.
Let's Write Together:
I'll write the first sentence of a story and hand it off to a student. He or she will write the next sentence and pass it to the next person. Soon, we'll have a complete story co-authored by the entire class!
All ages:
A general talk about the publishing world--both for magazines and books. Advice on how to break into magazines and book publishing as well as Q&A session at the end.
Signings:
Starting in February 2009, I'll be available to sign copies of Take the Reins.
Virtual Visits
Want to reach teens and tweens in your library or school through their favorite form of communication? I offer chat or instant message sessions with schools and libraries.
Or, if you're interested in hosting a virtual workshop or Q&A session, I'll be offering these via DVD. Your students or library group can submit questions to me about writing that I'll answer and send to your library or school via DVD.
Video chatting is also available for those with computer access and a Web camera.
Thinking of something else? I'm flexible and more than willing to discuss your library or classroom needs.
